PAUSE

One Moment Can Change Everything.Learn to PAUSE Before It Does.

Every young person experiences anger, pressure, fear, embarrassment, disappointment, and conflict. The challenge is learning what to do in the critical moment before an emotion becomes an action. PAUSE is an educational youth-development initiative of the Austin Metcalf Foundation Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. It equips young people, families, educators, coaches, counselors, and community leaders with practical tools for emotional regulation, responsible decision-making, and peaceful conflict resolution. PAUSE helps young people slow down, understand what they are feeling, consider the consequences, and make a decision that protects their life, freedom, education, relationships, and future.

The Power of One Pause

An argument can begin in seconds. An emotional reaction can affect multiple lives forever. A young person may lose an opportunity, a relationship, their freedom, or even their life because of one decision made during a moment of anger, fear, frustration, or peer pressure. PAUSE creates space between emotion and action. It teaches young people that feelings are real—but feelings do not have to control their decisions. Walking away is not weakness. Asking for help is not failure. Emotional control is strength.
One pause can prevent one reaction. One better decision can protect an entire future.
The PAUSE Framework

What Does PAUSE Mean?

PAUSE is a simple, memorable decision-making framework that young people can use at home, at school, online, during athletic competition, and whenever they face pressure or conflict.

P

Proceed Slowly

Stop for a moment. Breathe. Give yourself time before responding.

A

Ask What I Am Feeling

Identify the emotion behind the reaction. Are you angry, afraid, embarrassed, frustrated, disappointed, jealous, or feeling disrespected?

U

Understand the Options

Consider what you can do next and what may happen because of each choice.

S

Select the Best Choice

Choose the response that protects your goals, your relationships, your freedom, and your future.

E

Evaluate the Decision

Think about what happened, what worked, and what you can do differently next time.

PAUSE Is More Than a Word. It Is a Life Skill.

PAUSE helps young people practice how to:

  • Recognize emotional and physical warning signs
  • Slow down before reacting
  • Name and understand their emotions
  • Manage anger, fear, frustration, and embarrassment
  • Think beyond the immediate moment
  • Consider short- and long-term consequences
  • Respond to peer pressure
  • Handle disagreements and online conflict
  • Communicate without escalating a situation
  • Walk away from unnecessary conflict
  • Ask a trusted adult for help
  • Develop a personal plan for difficult situations
PAUSE is designed to make these skills understandable, practical, and usable in real life.

Built for Young People at Every Stage.

Explorers: Ages 8–11
Young learners are introduced to emotional awareness, body signals, breathing tools, patience, and the importance of stopping to think before acting.
Navigators: Ages 12–14
Middle-school students explore real-life situations involving friendships, group chats, gaming, embarrassment, family conflict, peer pressure, and impulsive decisions.
Drivers: Ages 15–18

Teenagers examine more complex decisions involving relationships, social media, anger, independence, money, risky situations, future goals, and personal accountability.

Every age group learns the same PAUSE framework through age-appropriate language, examples, activities, and conversations.

Why the Austin Metcalf Foundation Created PAUSE.

Austin Metcalf’s life and legacy remind us that a single moment can change multiple lives forever.

The Austin Metcalf Foundation is turning tragedy into purpose by helping young people understand the value of emotional control, peaceful conflict resolution, accountability, and every human life.

PAUSE is part of that mission. We cannot prevent every disagreement, disappointment, or moment of pressure. But we can help young people develop the skills to respond differently when those moments occur.

Austin’s story should not end with tragedy. His legacy can help another young person stop, think, walk away, and live to pursue their future.

Parents or guardians should consult a pediatrician, school counselor, licensed mental-health professional, or other qualified provider when a young person’s emotional or behavioral challenges are frequent, severe, unsafe, or require individualized support.
